5 Things to Consider Before Finding a Roommate

Are you looking for a new apartment to move into? Choosing the right location and type of apartment aren’t the only things you need to consider. Finding the right person to live with is also an important and essential part of the process. If you’re not quite sure how to find a compatible roommate, here are a few things to consider before finding a roommate to live with.

Daily Schedules

Before you start screening roommates, figure out what type of schedule would be most compatible with yours. To help you decide, consider your privacy requirements as well as your sleeping schedule. For instance, if you’re a very private person, you might enjoy having a roommate with an opposite schedule so you can have full access to the unit without having to share the TV, kitchen or bathroom. On the other hand, if you’re a light sleeper, you might struggle to get a good night’s sleep with a roommate who’s on an opposite schedule and makes noise during the night. Determine what suits you best and start from there.

Habits

You’ll also want a roommate who has similar habits as you, especially when it comes to cleaning and organizing. For example, if you’re a clean freak, you’ll likely hate boarding with someone who is often messy and unorganized. However, messy individuals might be able to cohabitate together just fine with little to no drama. To avoid putting a strain on your relationship, it’s best to find out how they prioritize work, play, and cleaning before deciding to move in together.

Lifestyles

If you’re a quiet introvert whose idea of a fun Friday night is staying in reading a book and drinking a glass of wine in peace, then you likely won’t enjoy living with a social butterfly who loves to host weekly parties until 3 am. Find someone who has a similar lifestyle to you, or who will at least respect yours as much as you will theirs.

Pets

You should also ask potential roommates where they stand on having pets before you select anyone to move in with. The last thing you want is to find out your new roommate has a cat you’re allergic to or that they love to foster dogs when you’re seriously afraid of canines. Setting a pet policy before you start screening for roommates is a must.

Relationship Status

No one ever plans to become the third wheel in their own home but unfortunately, this scenario happens more often than not. Setting ground rules now about visits with ‘significant others’ can help you weed out a roommate who might be planning to gradually move their partner in to save on rent.
